On one of my early hikes along the coast, I commented that it "smelled like someone had a nice stew brewing (some combination of sea-salt and a sage-like smell)."
I have found that smell again - Method Escape Artist, Beach Sage Body Wash. (I know - it is like Kramer's beach-scented cologne.) But wow, really nice.
Shower-thinking is a pretty common pursuit from my observation. You have calming white noise, relatively distraction-free, the left brain goes into contextual auto-pilot so the right brain can go free ... lots of reasons.
So much of the shower industry has been focused on getting products to get YOU to smell a certain way ... but really I want some aromatherapy for this daily MOMENT. The smell at the time is intense and fades through the morning. Furthermore, I wash that scent off, right? I do still enjoy the beach sage smell on my skin, I'm just saying it is a relatively minor experience compared to the showertime.
Anyway, if you want to do a smell check with what a coastal hike in Marin is like, get yourself some appropriately named Esacpe Artist. (Thus ends the sponsored portion of this blog.)
