When I got my Giants e-mail earlier this week, I about deleted it like usual (really who cares?) .. but one thing caught my eye: Greg Maddux. He was pitching on Friday ... and obviously there were tickets galore. After some craigslist and ticketninja looking, I finally ended up at good ole StubHub. I lost an auction for some tickets behind home plate. But then some tickets opened right next to the Padre dugout, 2nd row in the Club Field Level! Done.
Sam and I had a blast: orange hair, watching Greg Maddux warm-up, cool Omar Vizquel ceremony, ballpark snacks, great Maddux pitching (but no win - they blew his lead), a TRIPLE PLAY (the first ever in AT&T park - ironically Omar had nothing to do with it), extra innings, a game ball and fireworks. It was a wonderfully fun night.

Om

Sam and his friend Leo found the Cyber Symposium to be a bit too intense ... they started some meditating to get everyone centered. (They also showed off their cool robots). Thanks to Ms. Gaine for the above picture ... and congrats to Sam for getting "Laptop Certified" - next year at Del Mar, he'll get his own laptop from the school to take home and use.
Happy 91st Grandma!
Today, my grandma turned 91. Woo-HOO! Sam and I are going to get to see her when we all head to DC next week (Thanks very much goes to Aunt Mary Lu.)
Well, I want to be 91 one day (April 29th, 2066 to be exact.) So, I took a bit of a hike today. I fittingly tried out the backpack I bought with some of my grandma's birthday money. With the 19lb pack, I hiked 9.37 miles from Rodeo Beach to Pirates Cove and back, with a brief stop at Hill 88. This hike is all uphill, downhill, uphill, downhill, uphill, downhill, uphill, downhill. It was actually 2919 total accent (which is more than climbing Mt. Tam!) It was an incredible hike though, the blue Pacific was always at my side; the graffiti of Hill 88 is quite entertaining; the solitude of Pirate's Cove was a serene place to rest. Hike pics.
91 here I come. Happy Birthday, Grandma.

Finally
Somehow, Sam had been here nearly 2 years and had yet to ride a cable car!? I think they throw you out of the Bay Area if you get to that 24 month mark. Yikes.
We went into the city and watched Indiana Jones on a proper screen. One thing about that movie, it helped me appreciate growing up in the 80's. Most people trash the decade, but really what a great time to be a preteen-teen ... getting theater movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Ghostbusters, Return of the Jedi, Back to the Future, Die Hard ... Good stuff.
After lunch, we took a small stroll and Mary showed me her nice office (she has a window - I no longer have a window ...good job Mary!) We boarded the California line up to Grace Cathedral. Unfortunately we only had 7 minutes inside before they closed, but it was still stunning and I look forward to returning. We did get some time on the outdoor labyrinth, a place I'll hold class sometime soon. Before heading home we grabbed a Beard Papa's for the road. A nice day off. I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend. Pics.

Beach Sage
On one of my early hikes along the coast, I commented that it "smelled like someone had a nice stew brewing (some combination of sea-salt and a sage-like smell)." I have found that smell again - Method Escape Artist, Beach Sage Body Wash. (I know - it is like Kramer's beach-scented cologne.) But wow, really nice.
Shower-thinking is a pretty common pursuit from my observation. You have calming white noise, relatively distraction-free, the left brain goes into contextual auto-pilot so the right brain can go free ... lots of reasons.
So much of the shower industry has been focused on getting products to get YOU to smell a certain way ... but really I want some aromatherapy for this daily MOMENT. The smell at the time is intense and fades through the morning. Furthermore, I wash that scent off, right? I do still enjoy the beach sage smell on my skin, I'm just saying it is a relatively minor experience compared to the showertime.
Anyway, if you want to do a smell check with what a coastal hike in Marin is like, get yourself some appropriately named Esacpe Artist. (Thus ends the sponsored portion of this blog.)

Not blogging much...
Hi there. So, I'm really not blogging much as the few regular readers have probably noted.
Sure, much of it is because of finishing teaching this semester.
But really it correlates strongly with reading Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody. I have just felt like doing other things with my internet time.
And now it is nearly time for Sam to be home, so I think I am going to go get beach-ready to get out of this Marin heat.
And then tonight, hopefully we can all "play" some "Endless Ocean" on the Wii. Thanks for sending it, Madduxes especially the little ones!.

5 things I liked about Maker Faire
that I didn't see last year.
#1 - My favorite thing was definitely the Sisyphus V kinetic sculpture by Bruce Shapiro. I'd like one of these in my home.

#2 - Toonlet - What's your story?
#3 - Timberkits by Mechanical Marvels
#4 - Last year I became enamored with the Instructables Robot, this year I like their small cards:

They lead you to little Instructables. I am particularly excited about this one, because we have a bunch of vanilla beans, and some pure extract would rock.
#5 - Lastly ... I must say, it was these goats:

They were playing king of the hill on the haystack. I had no idea this was a natural instinct. It was fun watching them knock each other off the top and butt heads ... and a bit gross when the guy on top decided to use his position to defecate on those below him ... but that is all part of the social economy, I guess.

Just an update....
Hello. Been a while.
Since I last posted, we had a visit from Dad and Liz, went to Yosemite, explored Marin County with them, I turned 33 and life has been quite busy.
The visit from Dad and Liz was really nice. We started off with a drive to Yosemite. Dad and Liz got us lodging at Tenaya Lodge just south of Yosemite. We hiked the Wawona Meadow the first evening and had dinner at the Wawona Hotel. After a huge breakfast, we hiked the John Muir-Mist Trail-John Muir experience to Vernal Falls and back. The hike was 5+ miles and we climbed 1,500+ft (that is how much we climbed ... elevation change was considerably more, I just haven't figured it out yet). It was a very impressive hike for two grandparents. I was very proud of them. Day 3, I saw my first Giant Sequoias in the just opened Mariposa Grove. We also visited the spray of Bridalveil Falls and the crowded beauty of Lower Yosemite Falls. Then we drove back. Pictures on Flickr.
On Monday, we explored Tiburon, Mill Valley and the headlands (including Point Bonita Lighthouse). On Tuesday for my birthday, we had brunch at the Cliff House. While I taught, Dad and Liz explored the Legion of Honor and the Annie Leibovitz. We then headed to the top of Mt. Tam (where we nearly got blown off!) The visit ended with a nice dinner at Sol Food (although we had to share a table .. that was a first for us.) All around great visit.
Now, we are prepping for a trip to D.C. in June, Northwest Washington State in July for the family reunion on Mary's paternal side. School will be ending in 2 weeks for me and a few weeks for Sam. We are both heavy in planning/doing for that.
Tonight Sam is having a birthday sleepover, so Mary and I will go check out Maker Faire this evening without him.
Mary and Sam gave me some backpack camping equipment for my birthday and with some cash from my grandma (and the 20% off REI coupon) I bought a backpack ... so I am planning on doing some solo packing this summer!
Anyway, all is good. Just a quick FYI. Peace, Cam
